About

XYCarto is a new company specialized in creating bespoke cartographic products, offering data processing services for large geospatial datasets, and tailored web mapping services. At the heart of XYCarto is the desire to make spatial data beautiful, accessible, understandable, and useful to clients and the public.

Who we are

XYCarto is the creation of Ian Reese. Ian has a widely varied background including degrees in Hotel Restaurant and Institutional Management, Mechanical Engineering, and Landscape Architecture, and has been working in the geospatial analysis and mapping space since 2012. Ian has also worked as a graphic artist and illustrator and brings an artful eye to all he produces.

Ian’s work is data driven and has a reputation for being visually stunning as well as informative. As a result, his work has appeared in dossiers for politicians including President Barack Obama (yes, that Barack Obama) and various politicians in New Zealand government.

Though XYCarto as a stand alone company is a new endeavor, Ian’s past work has typically been released as part of Land Information New Zealand’s official communications and most recently in a map of the Antarctic released by the New Zealand Antarctic Society. You will also see his visualizations of Wellington Harbor bathymetry data on the office walls of Minister Eugenie Sage. Check out the gallery for a selection of past pieces.

What makes XYCarto different?

XYCarto aims to process and present your data in a way that communicates complex messages to your audience in an intuitive way. We will present your data in a way that illuminates the nuances, details, and insights that would be otherwise obscured or missed.

We provide innovative and pragmatic solutions delivered with eye catching visual gusto. This is not your typical mapping, our products will not fade into the background or blend into the crowd.

XYCarto is an open source company – supporting open source enables us to give back to the community while innovating more quickly and reducing fixed costs for the client.
